Mini Music Masters Piano Studio is located near Enoch, Utah.
Music learning is very similar to language learning. At Mini Music Masters we focus on helping musicians learn music first and foremost. Learning to play the piano comes with ease and much enjoyment when music is understood.
Children go through various stages while learning language. Let's think of how babies learn language and compare it to learning music. First babies listen and take in the sounds around them, and then they begin to babble and make sounds themselves. Once they really start to understand the language, then they begin to say words, followed by phrases, and eventually full sentences. Children do not begin to read written language until they have an abundant grasp on communicating, and then they begin learning to read and write. All children go through these stages, although some children progress through the stages faster than others. Learning stages cannot be rushed; children learn at their own pace.
Specific learning stages in music (i.e. rhythmic, tonal, technical) are also learned at varying rates of progress by each individual child. Just like learning a language, children learn music through lots of listening and "babbling" at first. They then truly begin to understand what music is about and can put the various components together on their own. These crucial, elementary learning steps need to be taken before a child progresses to the next step of how to read music, which brings ease of success in this natural progression.
If you learned to play an instrument, you were most likely not given the opportunity to learn these steps of musicality before you were expected to learn to read music. I can tell you that I was not taught by this method, and oh, how I wish I had been! Many students become frustrated and end up quitting after only a year or two because of the difficulty of reading music before learning to speak music. This does not have to be the case if the student learns to love making music and understanding it as a language first.
